Can I claim Polln medication or services on my private health insurance?
Many Australian health insurers provide coverage for natural prescription medicines under specific conditions. Most private insurers offer coverage for non-PBS prescriptions under their Extras plans, subject to conditions. The amount covered will be dependent on your specific private health insurance policy. Typically, your provider will cover up to a predetermined amount per year and also have a maximum limit on coverage per prescription. Insurers usually require medications to be prescribed according to their policy guidelines, which may include specific documentation:
- Pharmacy receipt with listed pharmacy ABN and pharmacist details
- Details of the listed medicine, prescriber information, and provider number
- Proof of the paid amount
Documentation such as TGA Approval and a letter from the prescribing doctor may not be required by every insurer and should be confirmed with your insurer. It’s important to note that most insurers only cover products that have been prescribed via the SAS or Authorised Prescriber pathways, which means that patients are unable to claim on compounded medication.
